Children’s Play Area Design

Koons Environmental Design, Inc. has been involved in the design and construction of playgrounds throughout the Athens area. Two of the more recent play projects KED has worked on is a series of three playgrounds for Head Start and one for the new Childcare Facility at the Georgia Health Sciences University on the University of Georgia campus.

The Head Start playgrounds utilize a combination of earthwork, planting and commercial play equipment to create a combination of exhilarating open and structured play environments on very tight budgets. The playground for the University of Georgia Childcare Facility divides one very large open space into more manageable learning environments for different age groups & their care givers.

The site design features areas for nature-play that include adventure trails, sandboxes, climbing boulders, and a butterfly garden as well as areas highlighting commercial play equipment.

Existing canopy trees presented the opportunity to create a shaded outdoor story nook and the addition of a covered play area facilitates outdoor play in wet weather.
